Education: Space Maintainers

Sometimes a child may lose a baby tooth too early due to decay or injury. When this happens the other baby teeth may shift in order to fill the gap. When a tooth is lost to early, the Pediatric Dentist may recommend a space maintainer to prevent future space loss and other dental problems. The Pediatric Dentist can stop the shift of teeth with the use of a space maintainer. The space maintainer holds open the area left by a lost tooth by keeping the teeth beside the spot in place. The appliance is removed once the permanent tooth has or is in the process of errupting in the mouth.  During the patient's routine dental appointments, the dentist will evaluate and determine whether is necessary to leave or remove the appliance.
